Some love songs can be so un-romantic. Take for example Sondre Lerche’s “To Be Surprised.” The guy is one of my favorite artists. And this is one of my favorite songs. The acoustic guitar is catchy, the lyrics are cute. The line I have a problem with is: “When I wrap my arms around you, every mistake we’ve made crumbles.” Oh really? I was never aware that all relational difficulties disappeared as soon as two people embraced. I don’t mean to be overly critical. It’s just that getting to know someone, discovering their likes and dislikes and quirks, their ups and downs, is important. Learning about another person involves so much more than physical closeness. And actually, I think the learning is more important. To me, that is so much more romantic.
Maybe it comes from being on the Worldview Team for 2+ years, but I keep finding how important it is to avoid letting the implications in these songs seep into my thinking. It happens. Careful.
